The Critical Role of Anti-Vibration Tables in ICSI Procedures

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a delicate procedure requiring the injection of a single sperm into an oocyte using microscopic instruments. The precision required is on the micrometer scale. In such procedures, even the slightest vibration can be disastrous.

Sources of Vibration

Laboratories are subject to numerous sources of vibration. Internal sources include HVAC systems, centrifuges, and even foot traffic. External sources might include nearby traffic or construction. These low-frequency vibrations can cause the micromanipulator needle to deviate, potentially damaging the fragile oocyte.

How Anti-Vibration Tables Work

Anti-vibration tables are designed to isolate the microscope and micromanipulation equipment from these environmental disturbances. They typically employ active or passive isolation systems. Passive systems use heavy masses and dampening materials (like specialized rubber or air springs) to absorb vibrations. Active systems use sensors to detect vibrations and generate counter-forces to cancel them out in real-time.

Investing in high-quality anti-vibration tables is not just an option; it is a necessity for any clinic performing ICSI, ensuring safety and precision during micromanipulation.
